The experimentation of Patient group directions (PGDs), written guided procedures, developed to allow pharmacists (and other health professionals) to proceed with an assessment of the patient aimed at delivering a specific drug, in the absence of the doctor's prescription. Pgds are a paid service, at the discretion of the pharmacist, and therefore represent an interesting option for small independent pharmacies to compete with larger groups. To the current prescribing pathways available, for erectile dysfunction, malaria prophylaxis, smoking cessation, androgenic alopecia, influenza and hepatitis B prophylaxis, meningitis prophylaxis, emergency contraception, asthma, oral contraceptives, traveller's diarrhea, female hirsutism of the face, weight loss, menstrual delays, now adding that for allergic rhinitis. British pharmacists, who are members of the Pgd circuit, will be able to dispense a nasal spray containing fluticasone propionate and azelastine (Dymista of Meda pharmaceuticals), a medicine approved earlier this year in the UK as a prescription drug. The company has made itself available to sponsor specific training, upon completion of which the pharmacist will be able to identify which patients may need the medicine and, only to these, deliver a 23g pack, for a maximum of 3 vials over a period of 6 months.<\/span><\/p>\n
