We have launched programs in Italy and in Europe, and among other things, it is now on the agenda as a global emergency because it is the leading cause of death in hospitals in the Ghsi (Global Health Security Initiative), G7 and in the context of the " who. In short, a real global emergency“.

The said it Minister of Health, Beatrice Lorenzin, questioned by journalists on the topic of antibiotic resistance on the sidelines of the inauguration today in Rome of the new Onco-Hematology department at the Bambino Gesù pediatric hospital.

“It is about resistance not to one virus but to many and is therefore multifactorial – continued the Minister – How do you fight antibiotic resistance? It is fought in many ways: the first, by having an absolutely appropriate consumption of antibiotics during one's life, for example by not taking antibiotics alone because perhaps we have a little fever. The antibiotic should be taken only if under prescription and only if absolutely necessary, especially in children of pediatric age“.

“Second point – continued Lorenzin – antibiotics in farms and animals: Italy has prohibited any use of antibiotics to grow animals as happened in the seventies / eighties. We are applying very strict protocols for the care of animals, which for example cannot be slaughtered if the right time has not passed for the disposal of the antibiotic and a whole other series of measures. Then there are a series of international protocols that are being applied worldwide to reduce the consumption of antibiotics in animals“.

“There is therefore the issue of how these antibiotics can then end up in the soil through the disposal of faeces or urine – Lorenzin said again- so we also have the topic of pollution due to antibiotics. This is a global theme on which much attention is being paid in Italy, in Europe and in the world. Last topic, again, that of research on antibiotics: it is evident that viruses have evolved with a term of resistance and therefore research into new antibiotics that can combat it is being stimulated".

“In short – he concluded- there are two areas, one technical-scientific and the other of prevention, on which we are working. We are making new guidelines on Sepsis, bacterial infections and infections in hospitals. It is very important to keep the environments aseptic, wash your hands and follow all those basic hygiene measures that significantly reduce the impact of infections at the hospital level“.

Published: Tuesday 31 May 2016 – News www.beatricelorzin.it

Note.
