Following investigations into cases of cholestatic hepatitis reported after taking food supplements containing extracts and preparations of Curcuma longa<\/em>, and, in one case, after the consumption of Turmeric powder, the specially constituted interdisciplinary group of experts and the dietetic and nutrition section of the Technical Committee for Nutrition and Animal Health concluded that, to date, the causes are probably from be traced back to particular conditions of individual susceptibility, to pre-existing, even latent, hepato-biliary function alterations or even to the concomitant intake of drugs.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>The reported events involved different turmeric preparations and extracts and occurred after the intake of very variable doses of curcumin, even if in most cases the title of this substance was high and often associated with other ingredients aimed to increase its absorption.<\/p>\n

The analyzes carried out on the samples of the products related to the cases of hepatitis excluded the presence of contaminants or substances voluntarily added as possible causes of liver damage.<\/p>\n

From the examination of data from the scientific literature and from the information provided by the other Member States, reports of cases of acute cholestatic hepatitis related to the use of turmeric extracts also emerged in other countries.<\/p>\n

Therefore, in the light of these conclusions, it was decided to adopt a specific warning for the labeling of the supplements in question, aimed at discouraging their use in subjects with hepato-biliary function alterations or with biliary tract stones and, in case of concomitant drug intake, to invite in any case to hear the opinion of the doctor.<\/p>\n

For turmeric powder, considering the history and extent of consumption as a food, no elements emerged for particular recommendations.<\/p>\n

The situation will continue to be followed carefully in relation to the emergence of any new elements or scientific data to be considered in order to protect consumer safety.<\/p>\n
