The road is so narrow that the same Joseph Conte, on Twitter, notes that “the Government also obtains the confidence of the Senate. Now the goal is to make this majority even more solid. Italy doesn't have a minute to lose”. A liberating applause from the Giallorossi welcomes the result late in the evening, after 13 hours of debate and declarations, a tour de force with an uncertain outcome right up to the end, complete with chaos in the last few minutes, due to the readmission to the vote of the ex M5s Lello Ciampolillo and the Psi Riccardo Nencini, who at the second call and at the photo finish vote yes to trust, bringing the votes in favor to 156. Surprises are not lacking: two senators from Forza Italia, Andrea Causin And Maria Rosaria Rossi (very faithful history of Silvio Berlusconi at the time of the last government led by the Cavaliere) voted in favor of Count II. But the votes of the former M5S also came to the government's aid, even if not all those hoped for: they vote for trust Lello Ciampolillo, Gregorio de Falco, Louis DiMarzio, beyond Maurice Buccarella passed to the Maie, a Thomas Cerno, which returns to the Pd, ea Sandra Leonardo. The three senators for life vote yes Liliana Segre, Mario Monti And Elena Cattaneo. Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, on the other hand, does not convince the other ex MMS Michele Giarrusso, Tiziana Drago, Carlo Martelli, Marinella Pacifico and Gianluigi Paragone. There are 140 votes against. Italy alive holds: out of 17 senators present (Mauro Marino absent due to Covid), 16 follow the line indicated by Matthew Renzi and abstain, vote yes instead, Riccardo Nencini, who explains that he was convinced by the premier's words, but assures that he will not remove the symbol from the Renzian group.

Scrolling through the tables, apart from the vote in favor of the two Azzurri, there are no other surprises compared to the yeses already foreseen and announced. Between absences, in addition to one from IV and one from the M5S for Covid, include life senators Renzo Piano and Carlo Rubbia and Giorgio Napolitano (on leave), Umberto Bossi and two senators from Forza Italia-UDC, Salvatore Sciascia and Sandro Biasotti. The majority rejoices, until the end with bated breath: until mid-afternoon the numbers fluctuated fearfully and certain votes seemed to have stopped at 152-153. “The leap in the dark for Italy has been averted. There is a government that trusts the two houses of Parliament”, explain the Democratic Party; "The numbers show that there is no alternative majority", comments the head of the M5S delegation Alfonso Bonafede. Yet the path will not be downhill: the numbers collected by the Government, in the House and above all in the Senate yesterday, do not bode well for smooth sailing, especially since the balance, without the IV numbers, has changed and does not play in favor of the majority , which could end in minority in the commissions; if, in fact, the numbers of Iv are added to those of the centre-right, the votes of the current majority are exceeded. For his part, he sees the glass as half full Matthew Renzi, protagonist in the Chamber of a duel to the sound of accusations and replies with Prime Minister Conte: "Today they had to asphalt us but they don't have the majority"; the leader of Iv confirms the line: “From today we will be opposition, the prime minister has chosen to form another majority, he doesn't want us with him”.

The center-right rises up and asks for President Mattarella to intervene

The center-right rises after the confidence of the Senate in the government of Giuseppe Conte. Matthew Salvini, Giorgia Meloni And Antonio Tajani they hear on the phone after the announcement of the result and agree on the line: they will ask for the intervention of Sergio Mattarella. "We will certainly turn to Colle", announces the Northern League secretary, "if there is a government that does not have a majority and spends its time convincing, I don't want to think with what proposals, someone to change their tunic, a government that from today, if there is, it is even weaker, I don't think the guarantor of the Constitution will be able to observe this massacre for much longer”. Of the same opinion Giorgia Meloni, perhaps even tougher with the majority: “The left, which considers itself above the rules, believes that President Mattarella, in this case, will turn a blind eye, but I have too much respect for President Mattarella to believe it, all the more so in a moment like this".

Forza Italia "asks for a meeting with the head of state to evaluate the situation that has arisen", he says for his part Antonio Tajani after meeting Silvio Berlusconi. “We have to face the pandemic” on the health and economic front, adds the vice president of FI, “prepare the project to access the Recovery fund. We are ready to give all the support to solve the problems of the Italians, but this does not mean support for the Government". As for the numbers, in the centre-right it only underlines that, if the 16 senators of Italy alive had voted no, the majority and opposition sides would have been tied (156 to 156). With regard to the 140 nos, the coalition hoped for something more, but there is the claim that they held: the losses of the two blues towards the yes front were compensated by the two nos arrived from Misto, the former M5s Mario Giarrusso And Tiziana Drago, data in the past several times fleeing to the League. In the coalition, however, there is satisfaction with the fact that the Conte II government did not obtain an absolute majority as in the Chamber, even if the relative one was enough. If the center-right is united in the appeal to Mattarella, divisions emerge on the paths to be taken: while Matteo Salvini claims the position in the coalition or the vote, for Giorgia Meloni the path is only that of the polls.

After Polverini, the Rossi case shakes Forza Italia. More defections are feared

The case of Maria Rosaria Rossi inside Come on Italy. The former party treasurer, one of the loyalists of Silvio Berlusconi, votes for confidence in the Conte government in the Senate in dissent, placing himself outside the party. The choice takes everyone by surprise and displaces the blue leaders; with her there is also Andrea Causin, although his defection had long been in the air. Antonio Tajani, Fi's number two, flies into a rage and announces the expulsion of both in real time. Now many are wondering why Rossi went so far as to vote in favor of the prime minister and whether Silvio Berlusconi has a hand behind it. Qualified blue sources deny that the Cav has endorsed this choice, given that for days it has been reiterating on every occasion "never with left-wing governments, we are responsible opposition in the sense that we offer our institutional collaboration to face the pandemic emergency, but not we are ready to save Conte”. Late in the evening, Rossi confirmed: "I have not shared this decision with the president of Berlusconi". but this, he assures, does not mean a break with the former prime minister: "My relationship of esteem and friendship with the President is unchanged and immutable".

The senator explains the reasons for her yes: '”I voted to trust President Conte, who is not a party exponent. Conte in this extraordinary and delicate moment is our only interface in Italy and in the world. The vision of Joseph Conte it is of a liberal, pro-European and guarantor policy. I espoused this vision in 1994 and I will never part with this vision because I believe in it now more than then”. There are those who say that behind Rossi's gesture there are only personal reasons linked to old grudges against the current magic circle and that therefore she will never be part of a centrist group in support of the current premier. The fact is that, however, new ones are feared inside Fi by now defections, because, as a big blue warns, "what counts is the signal that counts" and the party, on the occasion of Conte's double formal passage in Parliament, lost pieces: one in the Chamber, Renata Polverini, out of 91 deputies, and two in Palazzo Madama, Rossi and Causin, out of 54 senators, a balance that on the one hand makes one draw sigh of relief to those who predicted a worse result but at the same time, due to the extent of Rossi's struggle, could lead the party to a crossroads.

The Senate Hall

L'Senate assembly will meet again at 10.30 for the discussion of the preliminary ruling on the decree for the containment and prevention of the epidemiological emergency from COVID-19 and the holding of elections for the year 2021 and will subsequently discuss the Report to Parliament on the budget slippage in view of the launch of the next one refreshment decree.

The Senate Committees

As regards the Commissions, the Constitutional affairs will discuss the decree for the containment and prevention of the epidemiological emergency from COVID-19 and the holding of elections for the year 2021, and the bill for the establishment of a commission of inquiry into the dissemination of false information.
