Counterfeit hyaluronic acid: it's an alarm. \u00a0The Ministry of Health warns<\/a> on a filler made in China. Which may already be on the market. However, it is possible to protect yourself. \"\"The crisis slows down consumption, but the world of beauty knows no downturn. Many have sensed the deal, offering cheap aesthetic medicine treatments, which often hide pitfalls.<\/p>\n

The latest alarm comes directly from the Ministry of Health, which warns against the probable counterfeiting of a hyaluronic acid-based filler. The offending product is Juvederm Ultra 4. On some lots, manufactured in China, the words Science of Erjuvenation are reported, instead of the original Science of Rejuvenation (Allergan)<\/a>.<\/p>\n

It is no coincidence that it is really a filler. Hyaluronic acid-based treatments are the most practiced in Italy. According to some data released by Aicpe, the Italian Association of Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery, 290,000 treatments were performed in 2013, an average of 800 per day. We talked about it with Prof. Antonino di Pietro, dermatologist and Director of the Vita Cutis Dermoclinic Institute in Milan.<\/p>\n

The alarm raised by the Ministry of Health is worrying. What is the offending filler used for?<\/b><\/p>\n

\u00abIt is a resorbable hyauronic acid, used to fill wrinkles and create volume. It is also called cross-linked, because compared to natural hyaluronic acid it has the addition of chemical substances, the BDDEs, which thicken the acid molecules and slow down their absorption by the skin. This is why it lasts longer than natural acid\u00bb.<\/p>\n

And the pure one instead?<\/b><\/p>\n

\u201cThis is also injected. It is more fluid and absorbs quickly, therefore not very effective for volumizing. However, it is ideal for regenerating purposes\u00bb.<\/p>\n

Hyaluronic acid is also present in many cosmetic creams. Is there anything to worry about?<\/b><\/p>\n

\u00abNo, also because it is a less pure substance. It doesn't have the ability to stimulate collagen production like the acid it injects, because it stops at the surface. However, it is a good moisturizer, it retains a lot of water and releases it gradually \u00bb.<\/p>\n

How is it possible that substances of this type are able to pass the controls that are on drugs?<\/b><\/p>\n

"These are medical devices, they do not follow the same process as medicines, and therefore unfortunately it can happen".<\/p>\n

\"\"What can the patient do to protect himself?<\/b><\/p>\n

\u00abAlways ask for the coupon of the injected product. Contains serial number, lot, date, manufacturing location, and expiration date.<\/p>\n

It is also important to have a record of your medical history.<\/b><\/p>\n

\u00abCertainly, also because when treatments of this type are carried out, it is good practice to always use the same acid in the future as well. Then it is essential to know what has been injected in case there should be reactions \u00bb.<\/p>\n

What kind of consequences can a non-compliant product have?<\/b><\/p>\n

\u201cInfections and granulomas, abnormal swellings with pus. Once healed, they can leave unsightly scars.<\/p>\n

\"\"How long does it usually take before you have a reaction like this?<\/b><\/p>\n

"Depends. It can happen after a few hours or after a few weeks \u00bb.<\/p>\n

What should be done in these cases?<\/b><\/p>\n

\u00abContact your doctor, who will then forward the complaint to Als or AIFA, the Italian Medicines Agency. However, it is difficult for a woman to report \u00bb.<\/p>\n
