INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTION

In April 2018, the seasonally adjusted industrial production index was estimated to decrease by 1.2% compared to March. On average in the February-April quarter, production decreased by 0.7% on the previous quarter. The seasonally adjusted monthly index shows cyclical growth only in the capital goods sector (+0.7%); instead all the other groupings decrease: energy (-4.8%), consumer goods (-1.3%) and intermediate goods (-1.1%). Adjusted for calendar effects, in April 2018 the index increased in trend terms by 1.9% ( working days were 19 against 18 in April 2017). On average for the first four months, production increased by 3.1% year-on-year.

In April 2018, the indices corrected for calendar effects recorded a broad positive trend variation in the capital goods sector (+5.6%); to a lesser extent, consumer goods also grew (+1.7%) while negative changes marked intermediate goods (-0.7%) and energy (-0.6%).

The sectors of economic activity that register the greater growth tendential are those of the production of basic pharmaceutical products and pharmaceutical preparations (+11.1%), of the manufacture of electrical appliances and non-electrical household appliances (+8.3%) and of the manufacture of machinery and equipment nec (+6.8%). The greatest decreases were instead recorded in the sectors of the wood, paper and printing industry (-4.1%), the manufacture of rubber and plastic materials, other non-metallic mineral products (-4.0%) and of the supply of electricity, gas, steam and air (-1.9%).
