ISTAT. Pharmaceuticals production in April 2019: signs of recovery. Declining turnover and orders

In April 2019, the seasonally adjusted industrial production index is estimated to decrease by 0.7% compared to March. In the average for the February-April quarter, a positive change (+0.7%) remains with respect to the previous quarter.

The seasonally adjusted monthly index shows a significant cyclical increase only for energy (+3.6%); instead, decreases were recorded for capital goods (-2.5%) and, to a lesser extent, for intermediate goods (-0.7%) and consumer goods (-0.5%).

Corrected for calendar effects, in April 2019 the overall index decreased in trend terms by 1.5% (there were 20 working days, against 19 in April 2018).

In April 2019, the indices corrected for calendar effects recorded a trend increase exclusively for energy (+3.6%); on the contrary, large decreases characterized capital goods (-3.8%) and intermediate goods (-2.6%), while consumer goods decreased to a lesser extent (-0.6%).

The sectors of economic activity that recorded positive trend changes are the supply of electricity, gas, steam and air (+5.8%) and the food, beverage and tobacco industries (+4.9%). The largest decreases were recorded in the textile, clothing, leather and accessories industries (-8.2%), in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (-7.4%) and in the manufacture of machinery and equipment nec (-6.2%) .
