AIFA presents the Report (OsMed) on the use of medicines in the first 9 months of 2012

Medicines. Aifa. Spending in pharmacies drops (-6.8%). That of local health authorities and hospitals increases (+8.7%)

The numbers of Osmed report on the use of drugs in Italy. In the first nine months of 2012, 1.368 billion packs were purchased. Total pharmaceutical expenditure at 19.2 billion. The cardiovascular ones remain the most used while the expenditure (+6.4%) and consumption (+10.2% of doses) of those with expired patents rise.

01 FEB – The 'Report on the use of drugs in Italy' presented today by AIFA outlines the sector in the first nine months of 2012. Overall, the analysis shows a stable trend in consumption. In the first nine months of 2012, Italians purchased a total of 1 billion and 368 million packs of medicines, for an average of about 22 packs each, with a slight decrease (-0.2%) compared to the first nine months of the previous year. Still in terms of consumption, in the same time period 965.2 daily doses were prescribed for every thousand inhabitants, a value substantially unchanged compared to the previous year. As far as regional consumption is concerned, however, the report indicates a certain variability. In any case, the highest levels are recorded in the Sicily Region with 1,083.7 average daily doses per 1,000 inhabitants, on the contrary, the lowest consumption is recorded in the PA of Bolzano (720 average daily doses per 1,000 inhabitants).

But if consumption remained stable, the territorial pharmaceutical expenditure borne by the NHS, including the net authorized pharmaceutical expenditure and the expenditure for class A drugs dispensed in direct distribution and on behalf, was equal to 9,223 million euro (152 .1 euro per capita) with a reduction of -6.8% compared to the same period of the previous year. Even the total private expenditure borne by citizens, including the cost of sharing (regional tickets and the difference between the medicine purchased by the citizen and the reference price of medicines with expired patents), the expenditure for category A medicines purchased privately, for those of class C, equal to 5,766 million euro, was slightly down on 2011 by -0.9%.
