The Poison Pills of the Pharmaceutical Industry

In March 2013, the seasonally adjusted index of industrial production decreased by 0.8% compared to February. On average for the January-March quarter, the index recorded a decrease of 0.4% compared to the previous quarter.

Corrected for calendar effects, in March 2013, the index decreased by 5.2% in trend terms (working days were 21 against 22 in March 2012). On average in the first quarter of the year, production fell by 4.2% compared to the same period of the previous year.

In March 2013, the indices corrected for calendar effects recorded a tendential growth for the energy sector alone (+2.2%); on the other hand, significant declines were recorded for the groupings of capital goods (-8.0%), intermediate goods (-6.5%) and consumer goods (-4.5%).

In the trend comparison, in March 2013, the growing sectors are those of the supply of electricity, gas, steam and air (+6.3%), the production of basic pharmaceutical products and pharmaceutical preparations (+3.4%) and the manufacture of electrical equipment and non-electrical household appliances (+1.8%).

The sector which, in trend terms, recorded the largest negative change in March is that of mining (-16.0%).
