MEDICINES BETWEEN USE AND WASTE

Public service

The Osmed Report, the National Observatory on the use of medicines, which has reached its eighth edition, is a unique key to understanding the expenditure, consumption and use of medicines, in a country like Italy, where the analysis of figures ( but even simple collection) seems to be an exception. This year the work of the Istituto Superiore di Sanità, Anifa, Ceveas and the Society of General Medicine (Simg), focuses on the theme of appropriateness. Six specific analyzes on cardiovascular risk prevention, treatment of thromboembolic events, diabetes mellitus, peptic ulcer and gastroesophageal reflux, antibiotics, major depression.
If in hypertension there would be an undertreatment of subjects at risk of 44.5% (less for patients with diabetes), in the case of major depression there is insufficient adherence to treatment (compliance) (premature interruption of therapy), so much so as to make one believe I waste such prescriptions.
Alarming judgment on broad-spectrum antibiotics with the risk of increasing drug resistance. Solutions? More information and training for general practitioners. From Maurice Paganelli, source"Health Supplement" by Repubblica.it
