Enzo Maiorca has died: the last legend of the twentieth century is gone

Enzo Majorca died at first light this morning at his home in Syracuse, he was 85 years old. He was by far the greatest protagonist of the combination between man and the sea, the first human being to break freediving records that rewrote pages of scientific theories.

From the 1960s to the early 1990s, it went further and further down reaching, with the variable trim technique, depths never before conquered by man. The record that takes him into the abyss up to 101 meters deep dates back to 1988, but Mallorca is also responsible for the discovery of sites of historical interest such as the place where it is located the Italian submarine Veniero, a cemetery in the depths at over 80 meters.

It was also Senator of the Republic and engaged in significant environmental battles such as, in the 70s, against the construction of the petrochemical pole in Syracuse, the defense of the Pillirina peninsula or more recently against le drilling at sea. He had promised that if he won the yes in the referendum No Triv, would have plunged again into the island of Ferdinandea off the coast of Agrigento.
