Cyber attack on the pharmaceutical company Zambon

Unauthorized IT access to one of the offices abroad was detected, directed against a branch of the group. The attack was promptly identified and isolated from Zambon's information systems, which as a precaution suspended activities in the Vicenza plant where 217 people work.

The company reassures that everything has been resolved without damage or repercussions on the activity of the employees. The stop, was necessary to allow the company's IT department to carry out all the necessary checks.

The Vicenza plant, inaugurated in 1946 and expanded in 2013 with an investment of 40 million euros, is the one dedicated to the production lines of liquids, solids and injectables in the "geography" of the group. It is a plant characterized by a very high technology, in fact it is part of theIndustry 4.0.

Each process is "digitally governed". Therefore, it is understandable that there may be repercussions on the entire production line. It is a very innovative company with an innovation-oriented approach.

Industries under attack

For a long time, the large Italian industries are in the crosshairs of pirates of the online. A maxi cyber attack coming from China hit many industrial realities a month ago, exploiting a bug on a widely used management software. The victims they are also companies in the healthcare sector, hit hard in the last year marked by the pandemic.

Italy is in the top 10 of the countries most affected by cybercriminals. Attacks on small and large companies have grown exponentially in recent months. This often happens due to lack of information and underestimating the risks of poor computer system security.

It is not uncommon for hackers to act with computer viruses, demanding ransoms to remove them. In the case of pharmaceutical companies, the concern is directed to intellectual property, especially with regard to the confidentiality of patents.

In 2020, with agile working, attacks on companies have also increased. However, the health emergency has led to an increase in investments in technologies and employee awareness of health security and data protection. Unfortunately, many companies still underestimate this risk and many deny the presence of these attacks to avoid reputational damage.

Hacker attacks: what they are

A hacker attack it can be defined as a hostile activity against a system, application or tool that has an IT component. Those who carry out the attack, in groups or alone, take the name of hackers.

Most of the attacks exploit the weaknesses in computer systems or act through emails containing malicious links. They are often used to steal sensitive data or to hold a ransom.
