Drugs: EU, stop advertising and better informed consumers

(ANSA) - BRUSSELS, OCTOBER 11 - Stop in Europe the advertising of medicines sold exclusively against presentation of a medical prescription, but also new rules to satisfy the request of European patients to be better informed about the medicines they take and therefore about the way they are treated.

The new approach, decided today by the European Commission and illustrated by Health Commissioner John Dalli, follows the European Parliament's request to guarantee patients "objective and impartial" information.

In fact, in Europe, not only do patients ask to be better informed about the medicines they take, but they often find themselves confronted with an ever-increasing number of information from different sources with the difficulty of identifying truly reliable ones. The goal says Dalli: "Put the rights, interests and safety of patients first". Furthermore, the new rules impose "the obligation on the pharmaceutical industry to provide certain clear information to patients and establish clear rules on the subject of voluntary additional information on medicines subject to prescription, as well as strengthening the control of authorized medicines". (HANDLE).
