Farmindustria, in the event of Brexit, transfer Ema to Italy

Massimo Scaccabarozzi assuming the agency will move from London

“We want the good of Europe. This is why we hope that there will be no Brexit in June. But if a different result emerges from the polls, I ask – already now to all national and European institutions – that the EMA (European medicines agency) be transferred to Italy”. This was declared yesterday by the president of Farmindustria, Massimo Scaccabarozzi.

“Our country – he adds – has all the credentials to welcome the European pharmaceutical regulatory body. And little data is enough to prove it. It is in second place for production in the EU (30 billion in 2015) and the exports of our companies are over 70%. Employment grows. In the last year, companies hired 6,000, almost half under 30.

The pharmaceutical sector is the flagship of industry 4.0 in Italy. Decisive steps forward have also been made in research: investments are growing strongly, with an increase in the share of Italian clinical trials at European level and with international successes in advanced therapies and rare diseases. Results obtained – continues Scaccabarozzi – also thanks to our competitive advantages: highly qualified human resources, state-of-the-art public research centres, presence of one of the most important national health services in the world, related industries and hi-tech supply chain. And above all to the regulatory stability guaranteed by the Government which has restarted investments.

An ecosystem of excellence in many respects therefore, thanks to companies and institutions, including Aifa (Italian Medicines Agency), now recognized internationally as a best practice for the innovative nature of access to medicines models. Arguments that allow me today to forcefully ask that the EMA, in the event of Brexit, find a home in Italy".
