It was one of the production poles of excellence in Lazio. Now it seems to be losing weight. The pharmaceutical industry in Rome and in the other provinces of the Region continues to cut jobs even if in many cases the economic data of the companies seem even positive. «Inevitable choices in the crisis landscape to remain competitive», say the industries. "These are not inevitable choices, but are the result of policies that tend only to maximize profits," the unions reply. The latest blow to the sector comes from Pfizer, the multinational giant that markets Viagra among its various products: a few days ago it announced the opening of the procedure to mobilize 181 employees, employed as drug informants. And of these, almost 40 would be headed to Rome and Lazio. This news comes while the very tough dispute between the workers of Merck Sharp & Dohme is still ongoing: this company is facing the fourth corporate restructuring in a few years and wants to expel over 200 informants throughout Italy, including a few dozen in Rome and Lazio. Without considering the over 150 redundancies declared in a few months to Warner Chilcott Italy, which had acquired the thriving drug branch of Procter & Gable, and then decided to send dozens and dozens of workers. A bleak landscape. «The sector is at the center of often strange operations, there are agreements between companies to lighten the workforce with acquisitions, mergers and transfers. And it is always the employees who pay the costs», underlines Alessandro Borioni of the CGIL. Pa. Fo.
