A study by the US National heart, lung and blood institute, in one fell swoop, transforms a few million Italians into potential subjects at risk who may need medicines. In fact, Sprint research lowers the value of systolic blood pressure, i.e. the maximum, to 120. The people who remain below, says the work which involved 9,300 subjects at risk and was interrupted a year earlier because the results were clear, see a reduction of a third are likely to have a heart attack or stroke and a quarter are likely to die. All this despite the most recent guidelines of both American and European scientific societies having adjusted the maximum limit towards the other, bringing it to a value between 140 and 150 depending on the age of the patient.
