LETTERS TO THE EDITORS: About the iPad – by Antonio Scano

Dear Colleagues, I recently had the opportunity to read an article that appeared on AdnKronos.com entitledPharmaceuticals: US study, doctors like whistleblowers with iPads”,  published on May 7 in the central column of the site. [Editor's note: see:  http://www.informatori.aiisf.it/Start/HDefault.aspx?Newsid=6024]

The emotion was such that I couldn't help but express my opinion and share it with you.

I must tell you that I found the news very fascinating and, like isf, I already see myself…in front of the doctor while, with the air of a great speaker, I brandish the magic pen on the tuchscreen which magically scrolls the images of clinical works, graphs etc.,etc..

I see my role as isf rejuvenating, I feel that my figure has changed, I throw away my now old professionalism, the one built on empathy, on the simplest rules for correct, healthy and respectful communication and, and off I go breath, what a feeling…to use the doctor as a great ignoramus who yearns for my miraculous scientific intervention.

Let's also make room for the new media communication (advertising style), the one that will allow you to save time, print media and, why not, maybe eliminate some isf (the usual bale-breaker that wastes the patient's time, not the doctor).

A communication that will make it possible to contain the unsustainable expenses of pharmaceutical companies, now on the streets, with revenues at a flicker. We should work to give them alms. Do you think that many of them, in a panic, fire here and in exchange decide to buy overseas, avant-garde industries worth several million euros….mah!! I'm sure the ipad will come in very handy for these companies.

But behind all this, who gains? ... Come on we will not believe that the promoter of such an initiative is so chaste and pure and does everything exclusively in the interest of the doctor and the patient.

The usual American…

The introduction of a similar communication approach, cold, detached and lacking a genuinely human relationship between people, will push us to the most exasperated individualism. This seems to be the accursed fate of humanity.

We can well imagine, such an initiative will bring advantageous profits only to the manufacturers of ipads, to the mobile phone companies that will offer connections in real time, certainly not to the workers, those workers (ISF) who by magic will realize their uselessness and will curse the day in which they had hoped that working for the pharmaceutical industry would have allowed them to carry out a highly qualifying profession after having obtained a degree with lots of sacrifices
