Menarini, the trial for patron Aleotti ends: his health conditions are precarious

Proceedings suspended for Alberto Sergio Aleotti, 90, the owner of the Menarini pharmaceutical company accused of fraud against the state by the Florence prosecutor's office, which investigated the management of the company.

This is what was established by the investigating judge of Florence who, on the basis of an expert opinion on Aleotti's health conditions, judged him incapable of consciously participating in the trial. The judge thus accepted the requests of the defenders, the lawyers Alessandro Traversi and Roberto Cordeiro Guerra. Aleotti's position was therefore removed.

The preliminary hearing continues for the other 12 defendants, including Alberto's children, Lucia and Giovanni, accused of money laundering and tax evasion. The removal of Alberto's position may have an impact above all on the compensations that could be established – in relation to the accusation of fraud – for the approximately 130 civil parties, including Local Health Authorities, Regions and the Ministry of Health. The prosecutors Giuseppina Mione, Luca Turco and Ettore Squillace Greco, who coordinated the investigations by the Nas carabinieri, quantified the damage to the national health system at 860 million euros, due to the accusation mainly due to having fictitiously raised drug prices. Next hearing on April 18, when two defendants will be heard in the probationary incident.
