Roberto Speranza, not a doctor, is the new Minister of Health. Catalfo at work

Roberto Speranza, born in Potenza, 4 January 1979, he was group leader of the Democratic Party in the Chamber of Deputies in the 17th legislature, from 19 March 2013 to 15 April 2015.

From 2017 to 2019 he was national coordinator of Article 1 and on 7 April 2019 he became its Secretary. On 4 September 2019 he was designated as Minister of Health by the Prime Minister in charge Giuseppe Conte.

He has a degree in political science from Luiss. Married to his historic partner with whom he had two children: Michele Simon and Emma Iris. He is a fan of the Roma football team.

The dicastery that was to remain in the hands of the 5 Star Movement with the confirmation of the outgoing minister, Giulia Grillo, passes instead to LeU. Speranza was elected in Tuscany, is a member of the Constitutional Affairs, Interior and Prime Minister's Commissions. He was the first signatory of the bill 278 “Provisions concerning the financing of the National Health Service” on 23 March 2018 and as co-signatory “Amendment of article 18 of the law of 20 May 1970, n. 300, and other provisions concerning the protection of employees in the event of unlawful dismissal" (277) and "Amendment to article 357 of the penal code, regarding the attribution of the status of public official to doctors and health personnel in the exercise of their functions"(909)

A brief reference is dedicated to healthcare within point 22 of the programme: “IThe Government is committed to defending public and universal health, valuing merit. It is also necessary, in agreement with the Regions, to ensure a plan for the extraordinary hiring of doctors and nurses; integrate local health and social-health services; enhance medical education. Action to combat pathological gambling will be strengthened”. But the open questions from which to start again will be much more numerous, including the 2019-2021 Health Pact, pharmaceutical governance and the presidency of the Italian Medicines Agency.

We thank the now ex-minister Grillo who also heard Fedaiisf among those interested in health in the listening conference on the Health Pact. We hope that the new minister will continue on this path.

Thank you very much for all the messages you are sending me.

It's been an incredible year. I have looked closely at what it means to be on the side of patients, in wards and outpatient clinics, in emergency rooms, in excellent structures and in smaller but indispensable ones.

I have shaken thousands of hands, met curious and sometimes stern eyes, I have spoken to experts, to the highest institutions and to patients, their families, to those who asked me for attention, even few moments.

I am a richer person, because now I know that there is a world behind the word health. A universe of professionals, of workers who carry on despite everything. An army of temporary workers, students, volunteers. And then there are the people who suffer, their dignity, their shy smile, the urgency to be heard.

Being a minister has been a privilege and an honor, I have worked hard and with passion to do it well. Sometimes I can say that I have brought about solutions and change, other times that I have nevertheless done my duty with intellectual honesty and moral rigor.

I thank those who have been with me during these long months, often uphill, sharing anxieties and enthusiasm. Thanks to colleagues and friends of the Movimento 5 Stelle and to all those who have made these 14 months unforgettable.

The relaunch of public health, the defense and enhancement of our health system, the right to health of all, without exception, have been my only compass. The work to be done for a Minister of Health is enormous and exciting and I am happy that I have never shied away from it.

For this I thank my family that I have neglected, now I will spend a little more time with my son Andrea and with my partner Gianluca.

I wish President Conte and the new Minister of Health, Roberto Speranza, a big good luck, sure that they will act for the good of Italy, and to protect our precious national health service, the largest infrastructure in our country.
