France: sleeping pill instead of generic diuretic Teva, fourth victim

PARIS - Another elderly man died in France after taking Teva's drug Furosemide, a diuretic which contained a sleeping pill due to a canning error. He is a 78-year-old man who lived in Hyeres in the south and who suffered from pulmonary edema after taking the offending drug.

An investigation has been opened in Toulon to establish whether there is an actual link between the patient's death and the Furosemide tablet containing the sleeping pill. If confirmed, the number of victims among the elderly in France would rise to four due to the canning error committed by the Teva laboratory, based in Sens, Burgundy. As a precaution, all boxes have been withdrawn from the market. Meanwhile, a preliminary investigation into fraud and manslaughter was opened yesterday in Paris.
