The patent expires; the pressure drops

In Italy, the results of treatments against high blood pressure "will improve when there are corresponding generics for all classes of antihypertensive drugs, and doctors will no longer be suspected of having conflicts of interest in prescribing designer medicines". To affirm it is Enrico Agabiti Rosei president of the Italian Society of Arterial Hypertension (Siia), commenting on the results of a study published in the "Archives of Internal Medicine" which reveals how Europe is far behind the United States in the treatment of high blood pressure.

“For many years – says the expert – misinformation has meant that doctors are seen as 'slaves' of the pharmaceutical industries, capable only of prescribing for economic interest. This is especially true for drugs against widespread disorders, such as hypertension, for example. However, within a year - highlights Agabiti Rosei - the patents of some 'blockbuster' products all over the world will expire and, having generics available, we will be able to get rid of prejudices and ensure that patients follow the therapies more and better , free from all suspicion". Indeed, according to the president of SIIA, the difference in results in terms of blood pressure control recorded between the USA and the Old Continent "explains why, at least in Italy, there is little adherence to treatment, and doctors are also a bit lazy ' in diagnosing hypertension. It is a question of changing attitude, lifestyle and approach to the disease: in practice, it is the mentality that must be adapted to our times". From Doctornews 01-23-07
