Umberto I, theft and receiving drugs for over 1 million: 8 arrests

An 80-year-old Mario Porzio, currently retired but with a background in the pharmaceutical sector, was the mastermind of the organization that stole over one million euros worth of special drugs from the Umberto I hospital

Pre-trial detention orders in prison and house searches were carried out at dawn this morning against members of a criminal organization dedicated to theft and receiving drugs of enormous economic value. In particular, the Rome Flying Squad and the "La Sapienza" University PS Commissioner's Office carried out eight pre-trial detention orders in prison issued by the Court of Rome as part of an investigative activity coordinated by the Public Prosecutor's Office at the Court of Rome against some members of a criminal organization dedicated to the theft and the receipt of drugs of enormous economic value stolen from the internal pharmacy of the Umberto I General Hospital in Rome. The suspects formed a criminal organization which in the time period between the end of 2012 and the whole of 2013 constantly and continuously carried out a series of thefts of large quantities of drugs of considerable economic value as well as significant social importance stolen at the pharmacy-warehouse inside the Policlinico Umberto I in Rome, specialist drugs of the oncological and anti-rheumatoid type, for a total value of over one million euros. Drug thefts: the mastermind of the gang is 80 years old. “Schumacher” the courier

Friday, July 11, 2014 – Italian business

An 80-year-old, Mario Porzio, currently retired but with a background in the pharmaceutical sector, was the mastermind of the organization that stole over one million euros worth of special medicines from the Umberto I hospital. Porzio was the one who dictated the timing and type of drugs to be stolen according to the needs of the "market", materially ordering them from the two organizers of the group, Giampietro and Lorenzo Montanari, the first employee in the bank and recently retired, who commanded the two material executors which drugs to steal. His son Lorenzo is considered the drug "accountant" and coordinator. To do this, they made use of the complicity of 52-year-old Oliviero Bassi and 32-year-old Gianluca Martini, employees of the Polyclinic on duty at the warehouse who are responsible for packing the drugs, purposely removing the "hospital use" label.

In addition, other subjects performed the duties of couriers. The couriers were identified as 41-year-old Marco Maggi (called "Schumacher"), 40-year-old Giorgio Manolo and Mahmoudi Abdelkerim, a 49-year-old Tunisian. Mario Porzio has not yet been traced.
