Every day thousands of refugees seek safety and relief from suffering. Right now, over 4 million Syrian refugees have fled their country giving rise to one of the biggest humanitarian crises of the last 25 years (UNHCR data).

To address this serious situation, Janssen with Johnson & Johnson Corporate Citizenship Trust (Trust) started one series of health and humanitarian interventions to alleviate the plight of refugees and to help them find safety and relief from suffering.

In support of this global approach to the crisis, the Trust is collaborating, together with J&J's global partner Save the Children, to launch a online platform to enable Janssen employees, a pharmaceutical company of the Johnson & Johnson Group, to make a donation. Donations will go to Save the Children to respond quickly to the refugee crisis.

Through this online tool, it will be possible to donate "food for a day" to a child who fled war and extreme poverty, forced to sleep in a refugee camp or in the open. Through the funds raised, Save the Children will purchase milk and bread, as well as non-perishable foods that are a source of protein. In addition, donations will be used to bring drinking water to a community of 800 people still living in Syria, or provide mothers and children sleeping in refugee camps or in the open air with a personal hygiene kit.

“We are proud to be able to make our contribution to the serious refugee situation which in recent months has been assuming increasingly worrying dimensions,” he said. Massimo Scaccabarozzi, President and CEO of Janssen Italia – Therefore it is essential to give a concrete and rapid response to the humanitarian crisis, starting right from our company. I hope that, also thanks to our donations, Save the Children will be able to alleviate the suffering of these people who have already suffered enough in their country of origin".

Save the Children is working along the refugee transit route, supporting refugee camps in Jordan, Lebanon and Egypt through the provision of protection, education, food, care and shelter. In so-called transit countries, such as Greece, Italy and Serbia, the international organization is working in formally recognized refugee camps and in so-called "informal" ones to provide tents, hygiene kits and food. Additionally, it established a coordination hub to respond to critical issues such as child trafficking, abuse and exploitation.

The Johnson & Johnson Group companies and the Johnson & Johnson Corporate Citizenship Trust (Trust) have already started multiple health interventions in support of the plight of Syrian refugees over the past few years, including:

June 2015: donation of pharmaceutical products in favor of the humanitarian aid organization ANERA in support of refugee camps in Lebanon;
May 2014: Donation of trauma equipment to the DePuy Synthes Middle East Association in favor of the surgical-reconstructive treatment project of Médecins Sans Frontières carried out in the Zaatari refugee camp in Jordan, for a total value of 1.4 billion dollars;
2013: The Trust rescheduled its grants ($137,000) to the Aga Khan Foundation's (AKF) humanitarian response in Syria, to support for the health of babies and children and for communicable disease prevention programs in the Salamieh district of Syria.
