"Strike by family doctors. One out of two clinics closed today and tomorrow"

The Lombard family doctors adhering to SNAMI will go on strike today and tomorrow 28 September. Under accusation is the regional collective agreement which encourages the creation of associated practices 'to the detriment of the doctor-patient relationship', the extension of the 20% of the opening hours of the clinics and visits on Saturdays. The doctors adhering to FIMMG are in favor of the proposals.

"Healthcare, new Orders"

The decree for the establishment of the Orders will arrive by 4 March 2008. Yesterday the Senate converted the Government's bill into law which extended the deadline for the delegation to the Minister of Health to prepare the implementing decrees of law 43/2006 which started the establishment of Orders for the 22 non-medical professions in the health area, divided into 4 degree classes: nursing-midwifery, rehabilitation, prevention and technical-healthcare.

Novartis Prexige FDA bowl

The FDA has not cleared Novartis' arthritis drug Prexige for marketing. The medicine was withdrawn from the Australian market in August following the deaths of some patients. The company reports that the FDA declares its willingness to examine the possibility of using the drug for patients for whom the drug provides an acceptable risk/benefit ratio.

"Even the journal is made in India"

The big scientific 'journals' are increasingly Indian. The scientific proofreading system is still managed by Europe and the United States, but page layout, editing, graphics, proofreading and validation of proofs are increasingly done by Indians, with costs 50% lower than those in Europe. Mariam Ram, Director of Tnq Books and Journals, explains: 'many entrepreneurs launch themselves into this sector attracted by the strong earnings of an entirely foreign market and go in search of already trained workers, but few understand that it is a very demanding sector, in which low prices are not enough to last. For a scientific journal, even a few errors in a text can become very serious damage'. Ram's company produces 500,000 pages a year of some of the world's best scientific journals, including those of the Cellpress group.
